In addition to occupying a special place in the intellectual debate, “school knowledge” has acquired new dimensions and diversified definitions, contrasting “erudite knowledge” and “school knowledge”, knowledge and power, knowledge and competency. Given the interdisciplinary character of this field of study, we emphasize the approaches proposed by sociology of education. We use as a reference the so-called sociology of the curriculum, developed in Great Britain and the French sociology of school knowledge, because of its influence on Brazilian educational research. Yet we concentrate on the analysis conducted in Brazil, emphasizing not only the fertility of this intellectual field but, above all, the trends that steer the debate about school knowledge.
