Os Professores e a Fabricação de Identidades (Teachers and the fabrication of identities)

Abstract

This article represents a theoretical effort to lay the basis for a systematic questioning about teachers. One of central arguments of the author is the idea that the management of teachers' identities is crucial to understand the educational systems, be they democratic or totalitarian. The author argues that the identity transformations are steered by the state through discourse; this is a sophisticated method of control and an efficient form of managing the transformation. The argument is that ideas about government through discourse, of official identity construction and surveillance of identity borders (associating teachers' identity with national and work identity) are useful to the understanding of specific development phases of state and public schooling in any nation.
