Abstract

In this article the authors contextualize the thought of John Dewey, both in the US society in general, and within the educational field in particular. To the authors, Dewey was a quite complex figure and his thought does not fit a single label. Dewey is introduced here as a forefront thinker in US pragmatism and progressivism and someone whose theory and practice integrates areas such as sociology, psychology and philosophy. Not less important is the emphasis given to Dewey's role during the US involvement in the First World War and in the international tribunal assembled to trial Trotsky.
